Combi vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?

6 min read

The Most Common Question We Get Asked

When a customer needs a new boiler, the first thing we discuss is which type is right for their home. It's not a one-size-fits-all answer, and getting the right boiler makes a genuine difference to your comfort, your energy bills, and the practicality of your hot water supply.

At Blimp Plumbing, Scott and Fraser have installed hundreds of boilers across Portsmouth and Hampshire. Here's our honest, plain-English guide to the two most common types: combi boilers and system boilers.

What Is a Combi Boiler?

A combination boiler — or "combi" — is the most popular boiler type in the UK, and for good reason. It heats water directly from the mains on demand, which means there's no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank in the loft.

When you turn on a hot tap or the shower, the combi fires up and heats the water instantly as it passes through the boiler. When you turn the tap off, it stops.

How it works: Cold mains water flows into the boiler, gets heated by the gas burner, and comes out hot at the tap. The same boiler also heats your radiators through a sealed central heating circuit.

What Is a System Boiler?

A system boiler heats water and stores it in a separate hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard). The cylinder stores a reserve of hot water that's ready to use whenever you need it. Unlike a conventional boiler, a system boiler doesn't need a cold water tank in the loft — the system is sealed and pressurised, just like a combi.

How it works: The boiler heats water and sends it to the cylinder for storage. When you turn on a hot tap, pre-heated water flows from the cylinder. The boiler also heats your radiators through a separate circuit.

Combi Boiler: Pros and Cons

Advantages: Compact (no cylinder, no loft tank — brilliant for smaller Portsmouth properties where space is tight), hot water on demand so you never run out, cheaper to install (typically £300-£600 less than a system boiler), energy efficient since you only heat water when you use it, and fewer components mean less to go wrong.

Disadvantages: Limited flow rate means running two taps at once can reduce pressure and temperature. Not ideal for large households with two or more bathrooms in use simultaneously. Dependent on mains pressure (which can be low in older areas of Havant and Fareham). And if the boiler breaks down, you have no hot water at all until it's fixed.

System Boiler: Pros and Cons

Advantages: You can run multiple taps and showers simultaneously without losing pressure. An unvented cylinder delivers powerful, mains-pressure showers. Ideal for homes with three or more bedrooms and two bathrooms. Most cylinders have a built-in immersion heater for backup hot water. And they're compatible with solar thermal panels.

Disadvantages: Needs space for a hot water cylinder (about 1.2 metres tall). Hot water can run out if everyone showers back-to-back. Higher installation cost due to the cylinder, extra pipework, and controls. And a small amount of energy is lost to standby heat from the cylinder.

Which Is Right for Your Portsmouth Home?

Here's our straightforward recommendation based on the types of properties we work on every day:

Go with a combi if:

  • You live in a 1-3 bedroom property with one bathroom — which covers the majority of homes across Portsmouth, Gosport, and Fareham.
  • Space is limited — No room for a cylinder? A combi is the answer.
  • There are 1-3 people in the household — Hot water demand is manageable for a combi.
  • You want to keep costs down — Lower installation cost and marginally lower running costs.

Go with a system boiler if:

  • You have a larger home with two or more bathrooms — common in the larger properties across Waterlooville and Chichester.
  • Multiple people need hot water at the same time — Families with teenagers will know this pain.
  • You want powerful, mains-pressure showers — An unvented cylinder with a system boiler gives you a showering experience that a combi simply can't match.
  • You're planning to add solar thermal panels — A system boiler is the natural partner for solar hot water.

What about conventional boilers? You might also hear about "regular" or "conventional" boilers that use a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder. These are being replaced less and less in modern installations, but if your home already has one and the pipework is in good condition, it can sometimes make sense to replace like-for-like to avoid major re-plumbing. We'll always advise you on the best option for your specific situation.

What About Costs?

As a rough guide, here's what you can expect to pay for a new boiler installation in Portsmouth:

  • Combi boiler swap (replacing an existing combi): £1,800 - £2,800
  • Combi boiler new installation (converting from conventional): £2,200 - £3,500
  • System boiler with cylinder: £2,500 - £4,500

These prices include the boiler, installation, system flush, and all parts. We install trusted brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, and Ideal — all with manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years.

Our Advice? Get a Proper Survey

The truth is, the right boiler for your home depends on factors that can't be assessed from a blog post — your mains pressure, the number of radiators, the pipework diameter, the number of bathrooms, and how your family uses hot water.

That's why we always do a free home survey before recommending a boiler. We'll check everything, explain your options clearly, and give you a written quote with no obligation.
